HISTORY
Marilyn Stevens grew up in Oregon where she studied with Leon Fokine, the son of famed dancer/choreographer Michel Fokine. She was from the era of the “Baby Ballerinas” – Tamara Toumanova, Irina Baronova and Tatiana Riabouchinska – and like most dancers she went to New York to where she regularly performed. At the same time Marilyn’s love of design and her talent for creating led her to creating costumes for shows she choreographed as well as for other dancers and companies.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1977 Marilyn opened M. Stevens Designs (later to become M.Stevens Dancewear) where she specialized in creating performance, rehearsal and classroom dancewear of the original U.S. made Milliskin – an innovative fabric created to highlight the fluid lines of the dancer and provide the performer with a beautifully fitting garment contouring the dancer’s body. M. Stevens Dancewear, under the leadership of Gayle Davis, continues the tradition of quality dancewear and innovative design.
